Robert Kubica, supported by the LOTOS Group, will compete in the WRC 2 category of the FIA World Rally Championship for the second time in the 2013 WRC season. Today (Friday, May 31st) Kubica and his co-driver Maciek Baran will be at the start line of the Acropolis Rally, the sixth round of this year’s World Rally Championship.
14 special stages covering a total distance of 306 km await the drivers competing in the three-day rally. What makes driving the Greek round of the WRC difficult are the uneven gravel roads, full of sharp stones that can play havoc with tyres. Combine that with the hot weather, and the Acropolis Rally is a sure test of the cars and the teams they represent.
Apart from Kubica, 16 other drivers will be competing in the WRC 2 category under the blazing Greek sun. Currently, the Polish driver is 15th in the WRC 2 General Classification, a high position earned thanks to his sixth-place finish in the Rally de Portugal.
Until now, the drivers have been testing their cars on the nearly four kilometre-long Examilia stage, south of Loutraki. "I'm here for the first time, so it won't be easy, but I know what to expect," Kubica said after Tuesday's testing. "The road is uneven and full of large stones. We made a couple of runs to check if the car is ready for the race and to build some experience. But we'll try to drive safely and avoid any problems."
The winner of the Acropolis Rally of Greece will be known on June 2nd. We already know that Sebastien Loeb, last year's winner here, won't be winning again this time – the Frenchman is not even participating in this year's rally.
